Hainan is also not on it, and many more larger islands are not. this is to make the map more easy. They didnt just leave out one part due to uncertainty/disputes or such as you imply. and yes Hainan is roughly the same size as the island of Taiwan. Full Comment>>

Although for a large part I agree with Lord_hanson in that the time and government information may contribute to how its reported, I do agree that there is a (natural?) tendency to put things in slightly different lights and severity.
