Tapwater on news Cup of Zhou: Zhengzhou’s Best Coffee Shops(24 comments)

Dec 06,2012 07:10 comment|34443|79101

This list is too short and probably not really reflective of all of the good Coffee shops in the City. If you plot these on a map you'll see that they are all in the same area - roughly in a 2 km square. It leaves out the Starbucks at Hua Yuan lu and Nong Ye lu, and also all of the coffee shops in the mall nearby, ... Full Comment>>

Well, I think this is at least the crime of assault so the foreigner should face legal and/or monetary penalties. I'm more worried about my Chinese friend who was attacked by another Chinese woman and got severe scratches to her face. The police would not even lift a finger to help her. Full Comment>>

Tapwater on news More than Inflation: Gaokao Exam Costs 80,000 Times More than 30 Years Ago(5 comments)

Jun 13,2012 16:39 comment|28652|79101

This article doesn't look at the cost of the exam itself or the cost for the state to put the exam on. The cost figures are apparently created by just making an arbitrary list of things that a student would need for the Gaokao, without even checking to see if this is what the typical Gaokao student gets! I should ... Full Comment>>

Tapwater on news "Sweep Out the Foreign Trash": Is Anti-Foreigner Sentiment Trending in China?(116 comments)

May 27,2012 10:59 comment|28098|79101

I think it is really good that Yang Rui spoke his mind for once. We might deplore this quasi-racist sentiment, however it isn't like the people who don't say it aren't thinking it. Yang Rui is really only guilty for speaking his mind. Any strong nation has strict limits on Immigration. It is the only way to preserve ... Full Comment>>

Tapwater on news World's 9 Most Polluted Places: Linfen of Shanxi is Ranked No.1(15 comments)

May 23,2012 21:11 comment|27963|79101

So, I did a little research and found that if you measure just by air pollution you get a different story of the most polluted places. Now, mind you that this doesn't tell about trash and water pollution, but arguably how do you add together different types of pollution in the first place? Anyway, if we just measure ... Tapwater on news Implementation of Chinese Laws: Logic or Magic Trick?(37 comments)

May 01,2012 07:23 comment|26934|79101

Even if there are too many laws (a statement I won't take sides on), this isn't the reason why laws aren't enforced. More laws make it easier to enforce the law, never harder. The problem is the police and other authorities will only make trouble for themselves if they enforce the law. They will quickly make enemies ... Full Comment>>

Tapwater on news Impact of Little Emperors: All for China, or Free for All?(8 comments)

Apr 24,2012 17:39 comment|26682|79101

The gender preference has made a surplus of boys even in history. Female babies were literally thrown out windows and left to die on the street. Unwanted daughters were sold to other families as slaves and later worked to death. This was normal in China. You can't blame the gender imbalance on the 1 child policy. In ... Full Comment>>

Apr 23,2012 04:43 comment|26627|79101

I think this anonymous persona has ideological blinders on. It is likely that he is the product of childhood abuse, maybe molestation by a stepfather or uncle. This probably led to lasting psychological issues, and I don't doubt he expressed it by torturing cats and dogs to death. In college his sexual frustration ... Full Comment>>

Tapwater on news Scapegoat Politics: China’s Problem with Universal Values(59 comments)

Apr 20,2012 17:32 comment|26502|79101

This discussion only proves that we each have an internal belief in universal values. If we didn't, we wouldn't argue. We would just say "you are entitled to your belief". But of course, if we say that then we are also saying that disputes should not be settled with reasoning. Instead they should be ... Full Comment>>

If that's the story you want to tell about America between the '50s and today, you're really not painting a complete picture. A lot of things have changed. Most historians will agree that this highly "moral" society we lived in back then is just a myth anyway. Alex may have gotten mad at what Rain said, ... Full Comment>>

Tapwater on news Scapegoat Politics: China’s Problem with Universal Values(59 comments)

Apr 17,2012 17:13 comment|26376|79101

This article has a serious logical flaw. The author has created a dichotomy between embracing universal values, which are by his definition western, or rejecting universal values entirely. But of course you don't need to do that, and universal values, being philosophical objects, aren't intrinsically bound to their ... Full Comment>>
