I just don't believe the numbers here. If they work 8 hours a day -- every day -- they would have to make 75 pancakes an hour. While the families do get to work for themselves and probably do make solid cash in comparison to other low-skill jobs in Shanghai, their income is probably at about 50% what this article ... I would say that if you're just living here temporarily, and thus are only paying rent, food, transportation (no car), healthcare as needed, etc, that Shanghai is not the most expensive city in Asia.
