I read recently that China is the world's leader in research into clean energy. Even if that's true, I've seen no evidence of its effects. I've been in Zhengzhou for 4 winters now (winter is always worst) and the air quality hasn't even slightly improved. Full Comment>>

I know, I live in Henan ;-) Yeah, I know people from as far apart as Harbin, Guangdong and Xinjiang and not one of them has a good opinion of Henan or its natives. There are a few good people here but they are a definite rarity. Full Comment>>

Even when this article was written (2011) it was really incomplete. There are now a ton of cafes in Zhengzhou, from international chains (Starbucks, Caffe Bene etc) to local chains (awful crap like "Dio Coffee") to individually owned shops. Quality varies wildly. Full Comment>>

The cops here are something else... I once went to a police station with an ex-gf to report her stolen mobile phone. The room where they wrote down the details of the crime had a small cell with a chair that looked like a torture device.
