Around China : expatlife26 commented on news Road Signs Call Hong Kong ‘Xianggang’ Between Guangzhou and Shenzhen

Yeah Guest2293436 is being an idiot. In the native language of the region, no matter if you call it Cantonese or Yue, the city is called Hong Kong. Canadians don't call Montreal "Mount Royal" because that's what that word means in English. That being said, I think this boils down to laziness more than trying to ... Full Comment>>

Around China : expatlife26 commented on news Drunk Man Moves Car a Few Meters, Arrested for DUI

In the US, at least in some jurisdictions (according to the show COPS), the standard is sitting in the drivers seat with the keys out. That's enough to prove intent. It kinda sucks because it really doesn't allow for any kind of grey area like with this guy's story. If true, he was behaving responsibly. But even in ... Full Comment>>

I also appreciate your positivity and good attitude very much. I was the same way when I first arrived. I REALLY wanted there to be something great and interesting about the culture here. Something positive I could take away. Unfortunately I think the reality is closer to a blend of the worst of both east and west. ... Full Comment>>

Actually I think a lot of that disgust isn't exactly unjustified given the poor personal habits of lots of people here have. It might not be their fault they think it's ok to spit and piss everywhere, but it doesn't make them pleasant to be around. Full Comment>>

Maybe shark was a bad word choice, I mean it like go-getter. If you're a sales rep for a company selling construction equipment you're going to fail unless you spend every waking minute trying to meet and close people looking to buy $1m+ cranes. Doesn't mean you're doing anything unethical selling cranes to people ... Full Comment>>

You are the 3rd or 4th person to reply saying "I was more successful than you and am happier being an esl teacher". You may very well know more than me about finance and that's great your tech company did well. Your situation, once again, is 100% irrelevant to someone who has never had a job other than ESL in china. ... Full Comment>>

Definitely man. "Because the chinese do it" is a terrible reason to do anything. People here aren't willing to get confrontational for whatever reason over smoking or line cutting etc but that doesn't mean they don't think it's trashy as hell. There's a reason they all talk shit about migrants. Full Comment>>

I have to agree with David555 here...when other families do something it's because they are mindlessly chasing luxuries (i don't deny that's a problem) but when your family does it you are behaving rationally? That's a slippery slope. I'm with you 100% though that china needs to get it's shit together when it comes ... Full Comment>>

Articles : expatlife26 commented on news China’s International Image and Influence: What Foreigners “Really” Think

I agree very well put. China has historically been a tributary nation, paying off mongol hordes and foreign armies to leave them alone. Their culture does a great job of setting up a hierarchy to insulate people at the top, but then since that power is based solely on their position in the hierarchy it doesn't work ... I agree; I also don't like their inability to produce food safely affects prices in other countries. The fact that milk powder here repeatedly has contained poison should be viewed as a serious failing of Chinese culture (frankly where else does this happen?) and Chinese people alone should bear the consequences of ... I think it is a preference for foreign imports, at least to an extent. I think of China as having two kinds of consumers: 'average zhou's' who pretty much have base all their purchase decisions on price and aren't really very open to try new things, and people who aren't price-sensitive at all or in fact will buy ... Other than food, I find fascinating given the cultural narcissism is just how few things which are concretely "Chinese" are held in esteem in modern China. Computers, skyscrapers, comfortable furniture, smartphones, modern clothing etc...those things aren't Chinese at all. I think modern China flat-out shames anyone ... Full Comment>>

I also, don't agree with you either, as well.
