Articles : Finbar commented on news Land of the Healthy: 5 Chinese Super Foods

Can't stand bok choy myself, though I like the idea of eating healthy Chinese foods (hell, anyone who plans on living in China for any amount of time should). As far as protein go, would it make sense to mix protein shakes (the gym kind) up with soy bean milk rather than regular milk, or would this boil down to ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news Keeping in Touch: Streaming TV Series in China

I was actually pleasantly surprised by some of the streaming websites, as they offer a lot of shows and movies in pretty decent quality (most seem to be 360p, though there's plenty of HD-quality stuff out there, too). The drawback to the sites offering nice quality footage is the fact that you get forced to watch 60 ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news Keeping in Touch: Streaming TV Series in China

Yeah, watching a video through Baidu had me install the Baidu Player plugin. This was recognised by Ad Aware as a tracking cookie (or some kind of malware, I don't remember exactly which). Worse yet, it messed with my settings and assigned itself as my default media player without ever having asked. Finally, the ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news Being a Good Samaritan: Do You Dare?

About two years back I got arrested and spent about 12 hours at the police station for trying to break up a fight. One guy knocked the other out, and I stepped in to prevent any further injury, after which the attacker ran off. I sat the guy down against a wall and tried to get him to regain consciousness, soon ... Full Comment>>

Around China : Finbar commented on news E-Bike Riding Foreigner Crashes into Local, Makes News for Not Being Respectful

Sure, behaving like a dick and telling someone to fuck off after you caused an accident isn't very nice, but I can well imagine the guy on the receiving end of the accident didn't act all that jovial either. I regularly bump into people when walking down the street and get angry/aggressive stares every now and then, ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news 6 Conversations You Never Thought You’d Have With Your Neighbors But Do

I've covered most these topics with neighbours/taxi drivers/random people walking up to me and taking an interest. Though I can understand some people feeling uncomfortable or annoyed when someone you barely know starts asking you weird or intimate questions, I usually enjoy talking to such people and elaborate as ... Articles : Finbar commented on news Why Are China’s Most Talented Overseas Students Not Returning?

Yeah, I realize that. I wasn't trying to imply that the government or individuals need to change their habits, but rather that certain people probably have some subconscious preference for certain cultures. I'm sure a lot of Chinese students go abroad without even considering cultural differences very much (just ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news Why Are China’s Most Talented Overseas Students Not Returning?

Pretty interesting article, though I agree to the poster's comment that it doesn't highlight all the reasons (and for good reason, it'd be quite a long read if it did). The original author seems fairly biased, as he (or she, I can't be bothered checking) focuses on the number of students returning (not even ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news 5 Places in China That Will Transport You to Another World

Wenzhou is another interesting example. Even though you'll hardly find any obviously foreign-looking people, there are loads of Chinese or people of Chinese descent who've either lived abroad or grew up abroad and returned there to study/visit family and such. The clothes down there, for example, looked rather ... Full Comment>>

Around China : Finbar commented on news Uncivilized Passengers are “Locusts” According to Beijing Subway’s Weibo

I don't see how people complain about the locust part, as it's aimed at those dirtying the subway. Did the people who got offended feel as though it was aimed at them? Good, then the guy's message seems to have reached some of its audience. Those who feel offended must somehow realize that they're behaving in an ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news Teaching English in China: Is it Still Worthwhile?

I completely agree. Company/schools' expectations as to what an English teacher needs to be doing don't seem to match Western ideas on the subject. I once taught in a place where each class I was expected to teach students for 2,5 hours in a row with about 10 minutes break. This was a public college, so I went there ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news Teaching English in China: Is it Still Worthwhile?

Having taught a bit of English in China a few years back, I agree with most changes in the way they hire. I remember walking into one teaching company for an interview and being told to watch another teacher perform (as it really is closer to a performance/monologue, than an actual class), during which I realized ... Articles : Finbar commented on news A Killer Hangover: China’s Problem with Fake Alcohol

Nothing new here for anyone who's stayed in China for more than a couple of weeks, though it's always good to get the word out. As you said, the more people read and worry about it, the more likely it is someone (namely the government/bar proprietors) might do something about it. Unfortunately, even when you know ... Around China : Finbar commented on news 5 First-Class Passengers Disrupt Flight in Chongqing; Are Anything But Classy

After having read several other reports on plane disturbances recently I'm actually glad to read about people acting like idiots, rather than assaulting airline staff as mentioned in some other articles (as if some stewardess has any influence on a flight's getting delayed). It sickened me to read about a grown men ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news Danger on the Dance Floor: Dealing with Trouble at Chinese Bars

And he wouldn't have spat the guy in the face if he hadn't treated his wife badly. It's as if you completely ignore the fact that, according to his first post, the other guy started harassing them before he did anything. As I said, I don't consider spitting someone in the face the right thing to do, but if someone ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news Danger on the Dance Floor: Dealing with Trouble at Chinese Bars

Sure, spitting someone in the face isn't the best thing to go for. How do you get so upset with this guy, however, when he just stated that he and his wife were getting bothered by the guy? Someone talking shit about his wife isn't considered taunting in your book? Is spitting someone in the face worse than ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Finbar commented on news Danger on the Dance Floor: Dealing with Trouble at Chinese Bars

I've gotten into trouble in Chinese bars/clubs a number of times, ranging from people acting like dicks and me not putting up with it to seeing people massively outnumbered and trying to help them out, but can't imagine the fight in this article to have simply started over nothing. As a Dutch guy I've got plenty of ... Full Comment>>
