Around China : da_wei commented on news Christmas Banned in Schools amid Anti-Christmas Protests across China

Christianity this week (that's from the Middle East and taken over by the 'West') What's next week? - discourage Islam (also from the Middle East, and part of China's North Western problem) Then maybe Buddhism (they got that from India) Hmmm - that really only leaves Daoism (Now that really is Chinese!) if you don't ... In Chinese culture, ingrained over 5,000 years, age carries respect. If they always called you Waiguoren (外国人) then that would be racist. ... Full Comment>>

I must say, I have to wonder what some people are doing in China if they hate it so much? Have they no pride in themselves? Why don't they just leave? Or do they like living in a "trash can/ash tray/toilet"? Full Comment>>

Articles : da_wei commented on news Experiencing “Real China”: Being the Token Foreigner in a Fourth Tier City

I liked Liuzhou when I was there - not too big, not too small, nice climate. It reminded me of home (Christchurch, New Zealand) with its CBD contained in a loop of the river, and central city park, with a bigger one on the outskirts. I'd love to go back. Full Comment>>

This only confirms I was right to do a CELTA course. A qualification is a qualification, after all, and its in Teaching English! Even so, I expect I will have to be very wary. Will have my lady check the contract first, and run it past her favourite lawyer (don't trust my Chinese that far yet!) Thanks for the ... Full Comment>>

Articles : da_wei commented on news Student-Shadowing: Spending a Day in a Chinese High School

OK, this is unrelated, to some extent, but I'm curious. What exactly do foreign teachers do in Chinese schools? Are they expected teach English grammar, reading and writing, as well as everything else, or is that left to the Chinese teachers, with the foreign teacher focusing on lexis (vocabulary) and fluency? They often let off fireworks after a funeral to frighten off the evil spirits so the deceased's soul can have a safe journey to the 'other side'. Also for significant events, like 80th birthdays (if they haven't died of cancer first from smoking too much, or being burnt to death when the fireworks shop went up in ... Full Comment>>
