You may be surprised to know that none of the information you presented in your blog is unknown to the majority of people, even those lowlife ESL teachers you're so proud to have left behind. Some jobs for foreigners are very phony, some are dead-end, and for investing you need to talk to a bank and have some ... Full Comment>>

I only mentioned women in pasing too. The characterizations about your lack of humanity were not started by me, but are valid by most definitions of the word. Humanity: "A set of strengths focused on tending and befriending others. The quality of being humane; benevolence." Your rigid world views are focused on ... Full Comment>>

I guess what is being said, is that you may not be openly discriminating, but you overlook a great deal of people, including local Chinese. Your focus is on those you deem worthy to be your peers; in this case it's snobbish white girls hanging around exclusive Shanghai bars and "cunty" clubs. You're not being ... Full Comment>>

People need to read this, for schadenfreude entertainment? Or as a cautionary tale of how a self-obsessed mind is a waste of a good education? I noticed you used sarcastic quotation marks for teacher. Perhaps you assume that every English "teacher" dreams of being a Shanghai bargirl like you, but just didn't have ... Full Comment>>

Country clubs? Of all the petty-bourgeois nonsense I've heard in my lifetime, this takes the cake. You assume that wining and dining, dating shallow girls in exclusive bars, and frequenting bloody country clubs is the desire of any self-respecting person whether they admit it or not. Everyone in the world should be ... Full Comment>>

A lot of Chinese are copying this smallminded materialism with a vigor that would put the 'originals' to shame. Facesaving, bourgeois posturing, pridefulness, the importance of wealth, and a serious lack of proper educations results in hordes of these retards afflicted with rigid-thinking. I have a blog on the ESL teaching topic, which voices a great deal of complaints, but I must admit that I've mellowed in my condemnation of the teaching. The situation matters. Some people think they're being cool by using racist terms, and hope it will get them friends. Well, I think that you're touching on the subject of stigmatism. In the Netherlands, the regular term for foreigner (buitenlander) had become so heavily charged with negative stigmas, that it was cosidered no longer PC, and newspapers had to use a more official term (allochtoon). Laowai simply means foreigner, but ... Full Comment>>

Whether laowai is truly derogatory? Everyone I ask assures me that it's merely an informal term, and can only become derogatory with negative tone and context. Online translators confirm it. It doesn't compare to chink, nazi or kracker, which couldn't possibly be anything but negative. In my opinion, anyone who ... Full Comment>>

Laowai isn't nearly as derogatory as chink, you know. It's an informal term, like 'brother' for a black man. Heavily context-dependant. In this context, laowai seems fine. I'd say 'Shanghai Woman' has just as much negative connotations in China. They have a bad rep in the country, and referring to her as "Shanghai ... Full Comment>>
