Blogs : DaqingDevil Posted a new blog The Great Climb - Chángchéng

I did it! I climbed The Great Wall (Chángchéng) and what a feat of endurance it turned out to be. I have also climbed the main mast of the HMAS Leeuwin when it was anchored in the calm waters of Thompson’s Bay at Rottnest Island. All these are physical exertions of the highest order but certainly ...

Blogs : DaqingDevil Posted a new blog Beijing Summer Holiday

My life and experiences in China have been focused on Daqing and the Heilongjiang province mainly, and the differences that exist here and in cities like Beijing and Shanghai to name just 2 is like chalk and cheese. I have spent the past few days in Beijing and apart from usual idiosyncratic Chinese behaviour and ...

Car horns. You made mention but didn't list it. Definitely a biggie. The Jingle Bells on the rubbish truck. Every day. Same tune. Maddening. The 5 foot speakers outside barber shops. Fireworks almost everyday for some reason. The daily morning pep talk and dance show for some small businesses. I get that every ... Full Comment>>

Blogs : DaqingDevil commented on JayKnox 's blog Racial Appearance as a Teaching 'Qualification': Who's to Blame?

Clever reversal of racism. Well written. It's all about perception isn't it? A person with Asian appearances MUST know more about Asian originated martial arts.....surely? And here? A caucasian looking person MUST know more about speaking English than an Asian.....right? And if you're black African? That's a whole ... Full Comment>>

That is, I presume a whale shark, protected in many parts of the world because people pay big money to swim with them. China would make more money promoting swims with the sharks for tourists than loudly crowing about just how much money this poor bloody animal is worth. Full Comment>>

Well you have to admit it's an unusual way to demolish a building. Safe? I'm intrigued to know how. I suspect the next item about this will be the unfortunate demise of the driver as the dozer falls off the building and the subsequent collateral damage to buildings and people below. Watch this space! Full Comment>>

Yes I empathize with the writer about the life of a Chinese student. It beggars belief and whatever it is they learn I can assure you one of the subjects IS NOT about life and another IS NOT about what goes on in other countries! But what's the answer? The gaokao exam? The standard of teachers in the public system? ... Full Comment>>

Articles : DaqingDevil commented on news Off the Wall or on the Ceiling? The Gullibility of Chinese Media

This is so true about the Chinese and their news and it filters into personal conversations you have with Chinese friends and students. Stuff they hear or read that is pure and utter bullshit they latch onto like a limpet because it denigrates something in the west hence glorifying their own country in comparison. ... Full Comment>>

I think we all love fireworks. There’s an old song that goes: “Skyrockets at night, afternoon delight…..” If there was mention of a fireworks display somewhere near me for some festive occasion when I was in Australia l would make the effort to go and see it. If you couldn’t get to the ...

Well another term of school is about to start as the long summer holiday comes to a close. I’m not sure what the kids have been doing because as opposed to the holidays back home where you see school kids having fun everywhere you go the kids here were noticeable by their absence. No kids in parks, none ...

Blogs : DaqingDevil commented on chamaflauge 's blog My Top Stressful Moments of the 24/7 Rush Hour that is Shanghai

By the way - last term we had 3 black teachers - 2 American and 1 Cameroon. We don't seem to have that racism problem here with that. And the school has no problem employing blacks. Why is there a difference? Or is there an underlying racist feeling from parents that doesn't show? I don't think so. But still...weird. Full Comment>>

I'm not having a go at Alejandro here but this rant is not really about spitting. The spitting thing has been done to death. Chamaflauge has gone to some deeper issues here. For example: I arrived back in Beijing today after my holiday in the Philippines. I didn't want to get off the plane and had a laugh with the ... Full Comment>>

Sorry for late reply. The lesson topic was sports and games.
