Articles : Mateusz commented on news Feminism in China: Past, Present and Future

Very insightful... after all, women don't use any fossil fuels, nor items made out of plastics. If only more scientists stopped wasting time on researching global warming or deforestation, and instead, focused on balancing the Earth's masculine and feminine energies, the environment, like, would totally be all groovy. So, in the West, where men are the majority of the homeless, the majority of those who commit suicide, majority to the prisoners, majority of those executed, majority of those killed on the job, and minority of college students, and where men have fewer rights under the law than women... that's the feminist society ... I'm glad that the rangers actually enforced the smoking ban, when usually, Chinese get away with smoking anytime and anywhere, regardless of the law. Since it was a state park, I'm guessing the ban was to prevent forest fires, and reduce some of the littering (walk down the sidewalk in any major Chinese city, and ... Full Comment>>

I'm guessing there just aren't a whole lot of gay/lesbian couples open in China (it kinda has a problem with homophobia, just so's you know). Unless there is a policy on this site that excludes gays/lesbians, they're probably waiting for someone to come forward. Full Comment>>

Articles : Mateusz commented on news Love and Unavoidable Conflict When Chinese Women and American Men Date

You're partly right. A man is obligated to spend money on his girlfriend, so long as she is a prostitute. Though, she would be obligated to perform the agreed upon sex acts. If, however, it's a relationship not based on the sex trade, and they are supposed to see each other as people (not whore and john), then he ... Full Comment>>

"The woman was thrilled, but quickly realized that she had forgotten her wallet." Unless she has Alzheimer's, "forgetting" a wallet is a red flag. "They broke up fairly soon after the incident." In other words, he dodged a bullet. The author (and the girls in these stories) takes the view that men are nothing more ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Mateusz commented on news The Shamate: China’s Misunderstood Sub-Culture

Even their "counterculture" is a rip-off. There's not much creativity in slathering dye and gel in your hair, wearing too much make up, and proclaiming, "I look different from most of the people around me! Give me attention!" The Chinese are perfectly capable of creativity and culture, but the government (and by ... Full Comment>>

So... what's to make anyone think this will cause any appreciable change? It's not like people follow the laws the way they are now, nor do the police actually enforce them (unless the offender is non-Chinese). The problem isn't lack of laws. It's lack of following the laws. Full Comment>>

No one is freaking out. People are calling out xenophobia when they see it. The Chinese "Us vs Them" attitude would be unacceptable in a (more) civilized country. I think part of the problem with understanding is that it's highly contextual. You gave a good example there. When a word's meaning is in transition, not everyone might understand the full meaning when they use it. Of course, some might understand, but also not want to admit it. If they throw out the term when they ... Full Comment>>

So, if "everyone I ask" assures me that "Chink" is just an informal term, and doesn't compare to laowai, Nazi, or cracker (however you want to spell, or misspell, it), then it must be so? I've seen/heard people use "chink" in a way they thought was just an informal term, and if asked, would say they were in no way ... Full Comment>>

How is it not nearly as derogatory? Can you quantify the derogatoriness of both words? If, in this context, "laowai" seems fine, then why doesn't "chink" seem fine, in this context? And when people of certain physical features are harassed in the West with shouts of "Ni hao, Shanghai woman!" or "Hey, Shanghai woman! ... Full Comment>>
