This hit me hard too. I was amazed by the genuine personable friendliness of the staff at stores and restaurants back in the states when I visited this summer. @laowai the Chinese word nongmin 农民 does not perfectly translate to farmer and can describe either people who make a living farming or uneducated, uncivilized peasants.
