Blogs : dongbeiren commented on hadleyj09 's blog Still Being Positive in China

Nice blog post hadley. Taiyuan sounds like a pretty awful place on all fronts and you'll probably feel better elsewhere. For me, the pollution really sucks but what got me down about China after my initial year and a half honeymoon period was the people and culture. I began to realize how much of society was just a ... Al Gore is a sanctimonious, self-righteous self promoter who flies around in a private plane and lives in a 10 bedroom mansion while preaching about conservation but I think he's onto something here... not the first one to come out with that kind of info. Full Comment>>

Blogs : dongbeiren commented on Dhatton91 's blog The life of a foreigner

Glad to see another post from someone enjoying their time here. As for friends, it is true that a lot of Chinese "friends" are not your real friends and have some ulterior motive. That being said, I've met some great and genuine people here. People who see you on the street, speak to you in English for 2 minutes and ... Full Comment>>

Blogs : dongbeiren commented on adb2014 's blog Why I'm Still in China

Your points are valid but not really appropriate for this blog post - the OP is happy here in spite of the problems you point out. He comes across as humble and realistic about his situation while your post comes across as bitter and spiteful. That's not to say that what you're saying is factually incorrect. But why ... Articles : dongbeiren commented on news Cancer in China: Survival Rate Much Lower Than In Developed Countries

Another conspiracy theorist.... it's true that the survival rate statistic can be misleading when cancers recur past five years and prove to be fatal but your line of reasoning is very dangerous. There have been immense strides made against cancer and early detection is extremely important in many cases. Look at ... Full Comment>>

Great blog post. There's a lot of negativity on this site and it's nice to hear from someone with a realistic and balanced perspective who is happy here. Good for you adb! This is also so much better to read than the nauseatingly naive posts of the eternal China optimist Hadley. Full Comment>>

Articles : dongbeiren commented on news Cancer in China: Survival Rate Much Lower Than In Developed Countries

This is disturbing although not really surprising. We can expect the cancer epidemic to get much worse with the food safety and pollution. China needs to develop a comprehensive national strategy to attack this problem on all fronts: early detection, better treatment, less pollution, safer food. Full Comment>>

Around China : dongbeiren commented on news Survey: 73% of Respondents Agree with Death Penalty in Corruption Cases

In a lot of cases in corruption actually causes a lot more harm to more people than murder. A murderer who kills a person ruins that life and the lives of that person's family. A corrupt SOB who embezzles millions from a public hospital (recent high profile case in my city) is causing loads more harm. Hang the piece ... Full Comment>>

It's a nice museum indeed and gives some cool insight into the history of Changchun. The war museum is pretty disturbing and is a testament to both the cruelty of the Japanese during the war and the inability of the Chinese to move on (I'm thinking of the writing about the Chinese traitors during the war describing ... There are a lot of people who live in Philadelphia to commute to New York City for some of the same reasons.
