Articles : dongbeiren commented on news What Does it Take to Be Middle Class in China?

Agreed that average income doesn't mean middle class, certainly not in China where average workers are poor. I've heard foreigners who make 10k in a small city refer to themselves as upper middle class despite having no real health insurance, pension, assets or substantial savings- the thinking being that they earn ... Articles : dongbeiren commented on news What Does it Take to Be Middle Class in China?

The fact that people tend to associate with people in their income bracket has nothing to do with what constitutes a middle class salary. So presumably you and most of your friends make 30-60k per month so that seems the norm... FOR YOU. The real problem is that middle class is a hard term to define. Many people in ... Full Comment>>

Articles : dongbeiren commented on news What Does it Take to Be Middle Class in China?

Interesting how it used the term "salary" of 45,000 RMB rather than "income" of 45,000 RMB. Almost no salaried employees in China make anything close to that. Business owners or investors however could have incomes exceeding that figure but do not receive a salary. Full Comment>>

Articles : dongbeiren commented on news What Does it Take to Be Middle Class in China?

So 10k makes you middle class but the average middle class family makes 45k? I'm confused, 45k is a lot better than middle class except maybe in Shanghai and 10k is not near middle class in a big city. It seems the data was self-reported and therefore probably should be taken with a grain of salt. And I think most ... Full Comment>>

Around China : dongbeiren commented on news Mayor Swaps Pollution Problems for Unemployment Woes

In all fairness there sometimes is a delicate balancing act between environmental protection and economic development. Though shaving 1-2% off gdp to clean up the air and water certainly seems reasonable, not so much though if you're one of the people put out of work by it. Full Comment>>

You would've made a great red guard. Use your extreme language to push an agenda of hate. Who are the supporters of gays? How do you define that? People who say gays should not be attacked physically? People who support the right of adults to choose s partner? They say ignorance is bliss but you're unhappy. Full Comment>>

I'm trying to imagine a Chinese tour group entering a museum in a western country that has a suggested donation for entrance. Your neighbors sound like my friend's old neighbor. My friend lived next to a nut job who would scream to himself when in his apartment alone, sing, and scream F your mother to the clouds but came to my friend's door shrieking at 11 p.m. because my friend "was too noisy walking down the stairs" in his apartment. You've been living in China for 3 months.... the rest of your blog post reflects that. Though I do agree that creepers are totally uncool. Around China : dongbeiren commented on news China's Doctors Are Underpaid, Overworked, and Sick of It

The official incomes of doctors are lower than their true take home pay - the more senior the doctor the more true this is.
