Blogs : expatlife26 commented on murphy903 's blog 8 Bits Of Advice For Foreign Teachers

I absolutely agree that being professional is a big responsibility but I think this is a little too fatalistic…”You’re in China so better just accept every negative aspect!” With good planning and executing a lot of those nagging China things just aren’t issues. Yeah, some locals stare and it’s not the biggest ... Full Comment>>

Blogs : expatlife26 commented on Erichu 's blog Why it’s getting harder to marry now

Interesting...I think shanghai in general is ahead of the rest of China. It's funny cause I think in some ways the richer the average person is...the less people think about money. There are tons of guys in the US who have some money and still can't get a date. In Shanghai the average person is doing ok...so no need ... Full Comment>>

Blogs : expatlife26 commented on Erichu 's blog Why it’s getting harder to marry now

Why do you think that "those who have a much higher status of happiness are those who are not so wealthy"? I'm not being a jerk i'm asking if there was a study done about life satisfaction in China. In the US, studies show happiness and income go up together until about $70,000...so once you get to a certain level ... Full Comment>>

No I absolutely can’t blame them and that’s kinda my point. Life sucks here for average people and I feel for them, although I find their behavior generally annoying. Even though things have gotten better, there's still that survival, security-seeking mentality taught by the parents/grandparents and maybe it is ... Full Comment>>

Blogs : expatlife26 commented on hadleyj09 's blog Why do you wanna live in China? (Because I love China)

If i was applying for a job in the US, i might cop to my 1 term as an ESL teacher just to add a little color to my resume, but more as part of the story of how I went to China and found something in my field, though I would never admit to it if applying for a job within China, where it's considered a stigma in the ... Yeah I don't understand how that's a crime. I mean it's tacky as hell but how is it illegal? I know somebody back home who put all Benz logos on their hyundai as an obvious gag...I mean you bought the car you can put whatever logo you want on it. If I cross off motorola on my phone and put a samsung sticker on it can... Full Comment>>

That's not really fair to call her a bimbo. She was willing to take a chance at being an au pair in a foreign country to get some travel experience. That doesn't sound like a bimbo to me. Full Comment>>

I'm really glad you’re enjoying yourself...but i think you're wearing a very thick pair of rose colored glasses. When I first got here I kinda got carried away too with all the praise and attention I got...after a while I realized that they did not "see me for me". How could they? Gailored, i'm not afraid of chinese culture, but i'm not going to make excuses for it either. It's not anachronistic to say that China (and other countries including european ones, i mentioned Italy) is pretty corrupt and nepotistic. The study was on how succession is handled with family-owned businesses. In places ... Full Comment>>

As a side note, I read an interesting study on family owned businesses...an obsession with family strongly correlates with cultures with more corruption and general distrust. It makes sense...where you have a generally trustworthy environment and strong rule of law company owners can hire professional managers to ... Full Comment>>

The point wasn't that the chinese (or anyone) are wrong for how they think of us (outside our control), but that what they think is irrelevant. I work hard, I really try to do objectively good work. To some though, i'll always just be the foreigner. And that's crap. If they like me for that, they're shallow and if ... Full Comment>>

I can give a little bit of insight into this, but by no means is this definitive so take it as being strictly "in my experience". I guess the big problem for these people is just that the lifestyle floor here is so low that someone who isn't competitive can't possibly carry themselves with any confidence. Blogs : expatlife26 commented on Erichu 's blog Why it’s getting harder to marry now

I think a lot of it is due to unrealistic expectations. I feel like nearly every Chinese person (understandably so because being a have-not here is a objectively a pretty miserable life all things considered) feels the need to 'marry up'. I mean when you look at the demographics it's almost 120 men for 100 women of ... Full Comment>>

I agree, i think "free" gets a certain type of person way too excited here. When I first moved into my complex, the gym was free and constantly full of people just hanging out there.
