But I’m not really interested in Chinese girls! That means I have no soul? I don’t have a problem with anyone who does, my point was that if someone doesn’t like Chinese girls, but settles for dating one instead of working to improve their confidence in dealing with the opposite persuasion neither of you is going ... Hey i'm happy to hear that like Paul Berger you found success in your field before making an informed choice to make a change in your life. That's absolutely fantastic that you are happier now, and especially that you feel you are making a difference in education. That's really cool. I can see where someone more ... Full Comment>>

Wow that's awesome man, great to hear it. I met a guy down in Shenzhen once who did something very similar, like a niche product business with similar turnover. I agree, I need challenge in life to be happy. In fact i think in your mid-20s challenge and skill development are more important than money. But money is ... Full Comment>>

Hey I didn't say I was CEO by 25. I got an entry-level position in my field through applied networking efforts. Am I proud of where am I? Yeah, absolutely. Yes, some people make more than I do teaching or doing whatever else. But, I think i'm right where I should be and I'm pretty happy about it. If you are too, ... Full Comment>>

Btw..."probably hundreds of laowai asking him to hook them up with jobs he chose you" I can see you picturing this slick 80s business guy holding court in the nightclub with a couple models while hundreds of poor ESL teachers wait on him, knowing that ONE will be selected for the good job he controls! I was thinking about your comment, and I think that my response is that if there is limited good practical advice on how to move up while living in China, is because it's no longer very easy to do so. My article concludes by saying that it might be time to cut bait, because frankly I think the low hanging fruit are ... Full Comment>>

Paul, i'm not the best writer so I may not have articulated this well, but I really did try to get across that if someone CHOOSES a life, fully understanding the consequences and finds happiness therein, that I am happy for them. You are also in a very different situation than the people I wrote this for. You have ... Full Comment>>

Thanks for reading. The practical advice I can give is pretty much based around networking and just in general not making excuses for yourself. I actually didn't have a friend to help, I made a friend while networking who could help me, which was kinda the point. You hang out with people with high ambition and they ... Full Comment>>

I feel sorry for this guy, but read this blog for a example of how NOT to conduct your affairs: http://space.echinacities.com/235677/blog/detail/1564 This poor guy was the victim of a scam from a woman. No, not an attack at all and thanks for promoting a good discussion! Very good questions and I'll do my best to be as frank as possible to really answer them. Coineiheagh, a meritocracy is where the most talented (those with the most merit, hence meritocracy) are able to get ahead. I agree with you that the US isn't perfect, but it's still a place where promotions are more likely to be based on talent than family. Skill, effort and smarts are ABSOLUTELY valued and ... Those are good points for trying to find an apartment anywhere, but it's not about outsmarting them. It's about frustration about having to play this stupid game as if our time is unlimited. I know the US isn't perfect, but honest-to-god it's the closest place in the world to a meritocracy there is. China has social mobility but it's been more of a lottery-winner type deal where people have gotten access to investment capital through land buyouts over the past 25 years or so. Full Comment>>

no we do appreciate people's time if it's invested in providing a quality service. I agree 100%, real estate agents in China are usually pretty trashy people. It's mostly commission only so they'll hire swarms of idiots and it doesn't require a college degree or a local hukou so it pretty much guarantees that it's younger guys (can't have a family on commission only) who didn't go to college but ...
