A big reason which I only briefly mentioned why I hated that job and school so much is that they (surprise) hired me on false pretenses. I took that job because I was hired by their Finance department to teach subject matter courses. That sounded kinda fun; keep my skills sharp for a year while I waiting things out. ... Definitely I was really lucky...I think there are more companies who would hire someone they like than you think. If you're IBM or Citibank or GS and you need another head it's cheaper for you to hire someone already here...you just have to know someone because they aren't posting that job online. I wouldn't want to ... Full Comment>>

Haha yeah that's showing a lot of commitment to your lie. Did you forget you were an American citizen and you could just fly to America and also enter Canada without a passport anyway pre-2001? Did the muslim militants follow you onto the plane to make sure you were *really* Canadian? On the other hand, pre-2001 ... Full Comment>>

It's not entirely true that a foreigner can't get a credit card here if you don't own property...but it's not easy and you won't get a high limit, just a percentage of your monthly salary. I think it can't be with a state-owned bank because their restrictions are tighter, but a privately owned one like Minsheng, CMB ... Full Comment>>

Definitely can't please everybody. But...I really enjoy debate as you might be able to tell! I dunno about that Paul guy and some of the others (could be trolls) but I do know from his other work (which I enjoy reading) that Coineineagh is sincere in what he says. I respect an honest difference of opinion and ... Full Comment>>

Admittedly, one thing that I should have added to the “So what I am doing here” section is “Because understanding the pros and cons of living here, I am truly happy”. That is as good a reason as any and it’s a serious omission on my part. I also want to address a lot of the comments. Most of the comments break ... Full Comment>>

Thanks for your comment Wookie1. Best of luck moving back home! I wouldn’t want to live in Kenya either, but unfortunately that’s why there are opportunities there! Regarding some of the comments you mentioned, I agree that one by Paul Berger is somewhat misguided. If what he said is true, that he graduated in ... Full Comment>>

Makes sense. My theory is kinda that in the west we have this longing for the 'good ol' days'. I see a cool 70s car and it puts my mind to old James Bond movies and the like; I don't think anybody here really wishes it was the 70s again! Maybe to appreciate old things you have to kinda have an appreciation for their ... Full Comment>>

No no no…a LOP is a guy who behaves in an unethical way to pick up girls and is extremely proud/open about his sexual exploits, BUT whose talents extend only to local women; often accompanied by comments about how horrible women from their own country are. Has nothing to do with a normal guy who happens to be ... Full Comment>>

This is getting out of hand. You are assigning me a TON of negative traits that you don't have any basis for. I'm not a bad person because I wanted a good job. Did I talk about all the apple products and luxury goods I go out and buy? I don't think I mentioned luxuries at all; save for enjoying good western dining. ... Full Comment>>

I wish you nothing but luck, but really i'm not sure unless you have some kind of china-dependent business model already in mind if China is the best place to do that at this point. Coineineagh, et al. I think that I should have made something more clear. I don't think any of this is correct on some sort of higher moral level, it's just a guide on how to make the best of the flawed world we live in without hurting anybody. There are great jobs out there...someone has to do them. Why not me? Why ... Full Comment>>

The only place I can see where you could get that idea was the part discussing why engineers make more than construction workers. I promise you that wasn’t about making a Reaganesque supply-side argument about why it’s fair; in fact the takeaway I intended (my fault not yours) from that section is that salaries ... Don’t make inferences about my lack of humanity, that’s ridiculous. I mean seriously, I’m not an idiot who would date some transparent gold-digger, but not every foreign girl is one. Dating/women only came up once or twice in the whole piece; the takeaway being that the better you do, the more options you have. ... Full Comment>>
