The driving here is a joke sometimes

Hi people! I have been in Shenzhen for almost a year and one thing that really pisses me off is the driving and how pedestrians cross the road.

First I wanna talk about the driving. I really cannot stand some of the driving. It's like everyone is in a rush to get somewhere which creates chaos and traffic. Bus drivers I find are the worst. If a bus driver wants to go to the left lane of a 4 lane highway then he will get there by force. They will get as close as possible to the car in the next lane until the driver gives way. But even then, drivers don't let buses go past them so it's like a constant battle between car and bus. I have experienced 2 minor collisions from bus journeys just because a bus and a car just don't want to give way to each other.

On the news recently, a driver was on a oneway highway when he realised he missed his exit (which happens to everyone sometime). But the ridiculous thing about this news is that the driver stopped and tried to reverse his way back to the missed exit! On a one-frikin-way highway! Inevitably, a car crashed ino his car which created a domino effect of 4 cars getting into a serious accident. I can't remember if anyone died but the news was just shocking to me. I am from UK and I have never seen anything like that before so I was just amazed at how stupid one man can be.

Another problem I have with the driving in China is not the drivers this time, but people crossing and walking on the roads. Again, it is like they are in a rush to get places so they find the shortest possible way to get there and that is by walking the wrong way on a road, jumping over the road barrier to cross the road, crossing at pedestrian crossings even when the light is red etc. And you also have people pulling carts of rubbish, riding bikes with 10 mattresses stacked upon the back going the wrong way on the road. It's like an accident is waiting to happen!

All this has created a fear in me about driving in China. I sort of don't wanna drive becuase I am scared I will hurt myself or hurt other people by accident. I'm not saying all the driving and crossing is bad but I think parents should take some responsibility and to teach their kids properly about road safety. I see parents with their children running across the road when the pedestrian light is red, throwing their kids over a barrier on the road and then crossing through dangerous traffic. Just crazy!

But in the end, I still want to drive here because I hate taking the crowded subway and bus to work. I think I wil have a lot of road rage when I do!
