Around China : RachelDiD commented on news NBA Legend Allen Iverson “One Upped” by Chinese Agents

1 In the original article, it was mentioned that the hotel had shut off their phones. 2. I suppose that shows what we have lost by putting up with the Chinese so long. Iverson is still human, and reacted like a human being to a suicide threat. Yes, an old China hand would have welcomed the prospect of one less ... Full Comment>>

Around China : RachelDiD commented on news NBA Legend Allen Iverson “One Upped” by Chinese Agents

I read the original article, was not surprised by any of it. Iverson was gracious and professional regarding the situation (more than I would have been); he continues to be far more kind to the Chinese than this culture deserves. The only people in the world who do not know that is them. All I came away with is that ... Full Comment>>

Around China : RachelDiD commented on news Skateboard Boy Creates Uproar in Railway Station

I assume it is to protect people from themselves? I could imagine that if wheeled things were allowed on the subway, people would end up doing stupid things with them, and then getting hurt, and then suing. I mean, look at the story here of the woman who hurt herself pushing and shoving for the coveted seat. Full Comment>>

Around China : RachelDiD commented on news Post 90’s Kid Earns 200K Making Apologies for People

Perhaps, but consider this: How many Chinese people do you know who would actually apologize to someone? Pray for a person they don't know? Empathize? I'm sure that the copycats would love to drive him out of business, but he does have this culture's Achilles heel. It would take a rare copycat who isn't too big of a ... Full Comment>>

Around China : RachelDiD commented on news Drunk Man in Wrong House Mistakes Owner for Thief, Kills Her

'Intent to injure'--seeing how he beat her to death while 'drunk' (I've done crazy things under the influence...nothing approaching that), there was more than intent. I wonder if he will get off more easily than the Canadian woman who bumped into the old lady on the Great Wall. Full Comment>>

Around China : RachelDiD commented on news 10 Yuan for Top-Self Liquor? “Cashier-Free,” Supermarket Gets Mixed Results

The last time these people got offered a chance to pick through their neighbor's belongings, the Cultural Revolution happened. The supermarket never stood a chance. Although, two days is pretty embarrassing. Full Comment>>

Around China : RachelDiD commented on news Chinese Tourists Complain About Coerced Shopping, Sketchy Travel Agencies

Chinese greed run amok from both parties. Chinese tourists--did you ever think that a 100 yuan tour package through Guangxi province sounded sketchy, or did you just laugh at how 'stupid' the company must be to offer it? Chinese tour guides--nothing. The money grubbing behavior is just so typical of this place. Full Comment>>

Articles : RachelDiD commented on news Humor Translates: Australia Loves China's Popular Dating Show “If You Are the One”

To be fair, I think Australians also probably think that it is funny because this behavior isn't part of their day to day life. If people are this greedy, stupid, and shallow in the West, they are at least smart enough to hide it. I used to think it was funny when Chinese just talked like that...until I realized ... Lots of points here: --What would you define as a compliment to a woman? It is a situational and specific thing. Context matters. The US wishes that American companies that innovate quality creative products didn't have their profits undermined by Chinese copycats, crappy fake products, and corporate espionage. The Chinese don't like American made porn. We can all quibble about the greater annoyance here. Full Comment>>

Around China : RachelDiD commented on news Smoking Ban in Beijing Begins, But Can China Actually Control Its Tobacco Use?

I can't help but suspect that tobacco is a convenient way for China to hide its other problem. I have to imagine Chinese autopsy reports that read something like, 'This guy's lungs are full of tar. He must have been breathing shit his whole life...because he is a SMOKER!' And then giving no other reason. Full Comment>>

Nature is harsh like that. I lived in the mountains when I was young, and plenty of well-prepared people would go for excursions, only to die because something went wrong. When things go wrong in the wild, there are seldom second chances. Full Comment>>
