The audacity of him!

The audacity of him!

A fellow HR Colleague shared with me that after interviewing a candidate, he asked her "So, am I hired?" She thought him asking was inapporpriate, and he should be aware that there were other candidates to be considered as well. I told her, I think he did the right thing. In fact, I encourage my clients to do that very thing when interviewing. It's part of my top three rules:

1. Remember to maintain eye contact, smile, answer the question and give examples to support your response.

2. An interview should be a conversation, not an interrogation. Try your best to engage the hiring manager while responding....you control the pace.

3. Never forget to ASK FOR THE JOB. Yes, you should ask for the job.

You have NOTHING to lose by doing so, and it is your career you should be concerned about. Don't be afraid to go after what you really want. So, no. I don't think it was innapporpriate for him to ask for the job. In fact, I know for sure asking for the job, at the very least, makes you a memorable candidate (as appartently he was otherwise she wouldn't have shared her experience with me).

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Do you think it is offensive for a candidate to have the "audacity" to ask for the job after the interview?
