We are living in the age of technology where communication is more and more important. Although English has gained a big territory, there is a great need of interpreters, translators and language teachers. For some people, learning a foreign language is a hard work and can take years of training without reaching a good level of communication. This viewpoint is shared by millions of people around the world. The following lines will explain 5 deep-rooted lies (or viruses against) about language learning and provide some practical helps for language learners. *1. FIRST LIE: " YOU NEED A HIGH IQ TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE" Is that true? WRONG Put in mind that learning a new language is a natural process just like walking, but however it takes a lot of time to develop connections and build a new data base in our brain just like a baby learns how to walk. Be patient! Learn as much as you can! *2. THE SECOND LIE: "THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SPECIAL INBORN LANGUAGE TALENTS" Really? Wrong, wrong, wrong! Always remember that none of us is better prepared to learn a new language than other humans are. When it comes to learning a foreign language, we all stand at the same starting point. So never think that Mr. X, Y or Z is better equipped to learn a new language than you are. The truth is that we all have the same inborn language talents. *3. THE THIRD LIE : "ONLY CHILDREN CAN BECAME NEAR NATIVE SPEAKERS OF A FOREIGN TONGUE" What do you think? Absolutely WRONG! While we recognize that children's language acquisition is faster and easier than that of adults, we have to know that both children and adults can reach the same destination, "the near native level". Just remember that an adult can do it wrong whereas a child will always do it right. *4. THE FOURTH LIE: "PEOPLE LOSE THEIR LANGUAGE LEARNING TALENTS AS THEY GROW OLD" What is the answer? False It is true that our mental ability may decrease with aging, but that occurs only after the 60's. Prior to that age, we keep the ability to learn new things such as a new language. So, it does not matter how old you are now, you can still learn a new language as long as you are intellectually active. *5. THE FIFTH LIE: "GRAMMAR IS THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO MASTER WHEN LEARNING A FOREIGN TONGUE" I say NO, NO and NO Why do I say "no"? Simply because a full control of grammar rules requires a certain maturity in using a language. Obviously, we would never expect a baby to walk a mile. Similarly, we cannot use grammar rules correctly as beginners. Here is the cure: spicy up your learning process with some other meaningful activities such as reading, singing and listening... Do it again and again! Never get tired of it then your progress will become evident. Now that you have gotten the antidote to combat language learning viruses, what language have you decided to learn?
