Working in China: First Step

Working in China: First Step

I was contacted through email by the assistant to the principle of a school in Shanghai and will be having a video call with him tomorrow. Since creating my EChinaCities profile, my resume has been viewed 65 times, saved 6 times and downloaded 4 times.

I viewed the school's website and it seems to me that the school is a healthy environment that nurtures creativity among its young students. I'm unsure if I will ultimately join the staff at this school, but I'm happy that doors are opening in front of me.

I haven't carried out much research into Shanghai, I have however made contact with a man with whom I studied at university who is now living and teaching in Shanghai, and he has had nothing but good things to say about the city. Initially, I was leaning more towards moving to Chengdu, a city which is not as well known to westerners as Shanghai and Beijing and does not have as much of an ex-pat population. There will of course be benefits to moving to a city in which there are many western ex-pats: the potential for meeting and having conversations with fellow westerners for example, there is however something about being in a truly alien place, the land of the unknown that appeals to me. The hero's journey is characterised by the hero journeying into the land of the unknown and mastering that which is new to him. Chengdu would offer more challenges than Shanghai I feel.

I am unsure of how the video chat will unfold tomorrow, perhaps it will lead to a job offer, perhaps it won't either way I am happy to have been contacted and feel motivation to continue my movement forward.
