Articles : Nikwestside commented on news More Foreigners Studying in China than Ever Before

It's definitely possible to make the case that the numbers might be padded or somewhat overstated. But it's also worth mentioning that Chinese universities are not actively promoting themselves to the Western higher-education market, and probably never will. Indeed, China is ever so increasingly focusing more on ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Nikwestside commented on news China’s Latest Work Visa and Resident Permit Rules

No. Residence permits are two years at most. If I'm wrong, I would graciously accept to be corrected (by a credible source). It's also important to differentiate between "residence permit" and "permanent residence permit", of which the latter us mere mortals will never see. But those can indeed be up to five years, ... Articles : Nikwestside commented on news Can You Work in China as a Non-Native English Teacher?

Seems to me you're making the same inaccurate claims that many ESL recruiters and Chinese parents are doing. Sure enough, French people have a hard time scrubbing off their accent, but have you ever seen an Irishman attempting to communicate with Chinese students? It's ain pretty. Full Comment>>

Articles : Nikwestside commented on news Can You Work in China as a Non-Native English Teacher?

Oh absolutely, you don't have to be a native speaker to get a work visa. The question is rather whether or not the school will be willing to go through the hassle of getting you one, but that's not related to your nationality. Full Comment>>

Articles : Nikwestside commented on news China’s Latest Work Visa and Resident Permit Rules

Hi Mandy219, the information you have, about master's degree holder not needing work experience is, as far as I can tell, still correct and up-to-date. However, the requirements are incredibly vague, for example, other expat websites have reported that "foreign master’s graduates from Chinese and ‘well-known’ ... Full Comment>>

Articles : Nikwestside commented on news Women Teaching English in Beijing Jailed Over Visa Issues

Unsettling. But as ambivalentmace mentioned, this must've been caused by something special or someone with a vengeance. The PSB tends to be pretty laid-back when it comes to ESL, and detaining (mostly) legal teachers for 10 days sounds way over the top. Full Comment>>

Articles : Nikwestside commented on news China’s Latest Work Visa and Resident Permit Rules

Thank you for the feedback, it's appreciated! Unfortunately, I don't know the exact procedure for changing an employer. But the basic process should be fairly simple (comparatively), and it requires that you leave your former employer on somewhat good terms. You'll need their HR-department to issue a "release ... Articles : Nikwestside commented on news Life Lesson's You'll Learn When Working in China

I never understand criticism like this. If you've actually worked in China, and not made a fool out of yourself, then you would know full well that the tips in this article are pretty much spot-on. Your personal opinions are irrelevant, and you as a foreigner most certainly don't set the rules in a Chinese ... Full Comment>>

Hi Cory, there most certainly are local variations to this process. What you experienced in Sichuan is most likely a streamlined process to attract foreigners. Beijing, on the other hand, probably has the opposite mindset; to repel foreigners. Good luck! Full Comment>>

I like that you disagree with me - that can be good if it's constructive! But I find your lack of sources, or further information at all with regards to A grade foreigners rather disconcerting, and it makes the point you aim to get across moot. Besides that, most people visiting ECC, or most expats working in China ... Full Comment>>

This article is actually a repost from January this year, and back then there were plenty of rumors about this new system. The work permit card is not an ID; all it does it prove that you are allowed to work in China. Your ID will still be your passport and corresponding visa or residence permit. Anything else is ... From personal experience, I would say that this article is fairly correct. Would following the Chinese work etiquette make you a bootlicker by the western standard? Probably.
