there were questions raised about a 2nd person in the video, so later his girlfriend was interviewed about it. but it seems the child was missed because a big red circle obscured it in most media versions of the video. either he has a child and that fact was conveniently omitted to avoid awkward moral implications ... Articles : coineineagh commented on news Exposed: Corruption in China’s University Recruitment Process

Oh my goodness gracious... corruption? Hurting kids education? Who would've thought? And I agree with the conclusion, that *open* transparency is a good way to tackle the issue... rather than that other kind of transparency (uhhh?). Maybe once qualitative quality of educational schooling improves for the better, ... Full Comment>>

I had a Chinese student friend back in Amsterdam. I almost lost the right to reside in social housing for 5 years by letting him register in my student apartment. Thankfully he unregistered before authorities started investigating. That's the last I heard of him. It looks like this guy found an old man who could ... Full Comment>>

Accusing people of trolling is usually a bad sign, more for the accuser than the alleged troll. I just realised your profile pic is of you posing in front of a car, and I just want to say that I hadn't noticed it when I said the above. And I agree it makes for another hilarious news piece, but I already said that. ... Full Comment>>

I'd think of myself as a lower form of life, selfish and damaging to social values, if I ever found myself posing for a picture in front of a luxury car. For me, the feeling comes natural, but I'm surprised how few people nowadays don't even understand the basis for my feelings at all. Full Comment>>

I think he remained stubborn because he wasn't in the wrong. As I mentioned above, the video footage of the crash was likely taken from a different incident, and used to incriminate him. It's insane that nobody in China even noticed that there were 2-3 people on the bike. Full Comment>>

"and then some" is an American expression which means: and more; and worse. You can look comeuppance up in a dictionary. Anyway, my beef is with the way this story was handled, and the potentially fake 'footage' of that motorbike crash. In response to yet another 'rude foreigner' distraction presented by Chinese ... The correct term is thief. A thief stole the money. The thief was a person. It wouldn't even have made the news if the accolade FOREIGNER wasn't linked to it, because locals steal 20,000 yuan from each other all the time. The state media is cherrypicking news stories and using divisive language to influence people's ... Full Comment>>

Not to mention, the ESL gig is actually limited in duration. I've seen ads posted for age categories 25-35 (most are less strict of course), and it's definitely true that employers are more reluctant to hire you as their foreign clown at 40+, because you're not so fun and energetic-looking anymore. ESL is rarely a ... Full Comment>>

Oh noes! Foreigners steal too! This is obviously more noteworthy than Chinese stealing, because foreigners' actions immediately reflect upon the status of the expat community (while any immoral act by a Chinese is automatically absolved by their cultural superiority). Full Comment>>
