Native English Speaker.

For people seeking a job teaching English in China this is a term which is often seen in the job requirements.  I have taken it upon myself to write this blog to address those who have misconstrued this very self explanatory term. A "Native English Speaker " is a person who has been using English as their primary mode of communication for their entire life.

With that said, it is clear that there are countries other than USA, UK, Canada and Australia having "Native English Speakers" . I assume employers include that as a requirement because they believe persons from these countries will teach "better English" than a person from another country. If that is the case, boy are these employers in for a surprise! Even in these above mentioned countries there are dialects of English which are widely used by the locals. If you don't believe me, pay very close attention to what is being said in your favorite movies . I am 100% sure that you will come across a multitude of grammatical errors.

So employers if its your priority to find someone to "teach" a proper ACCENT as opposed to proper GRAMMAR, go right ahead and  continue adding that as a requirement. However, if your priority is finding a teacher who can teach your students proper grammar (which is of more importance when taking English exams) you may find it helpful and less stressful to find a teacher.

While I am on this subject, let me say that adding  " white" or "Caucasian" to the requirements not only is this unnecessary but it is also a tad bit racist. Yes I said it, RACIST. Once I applied for a job and everything was going fine until the person conducting the interview asked " I'm sorry but are you white?" I replied  "No.I am black." I was then told "Sorry I can only consider a white person for the job because I am looking for a teacher to teach students 4 -12 years and a black person will scare the students" . I then understood how it came to be that a country that is so developed continues to have ignorant people screaming "黑人“, "吓死我了” etc. when  they see a black person. I say it is unnecessary because a person's race has no relation with their academic and teaching abilities, in addition, it also does not guarantee you this "better English" you seek.

Please note that it wasn't my intention to offend anyone, I have just reached a state of frustration so high that I decided that maybe by trying to educate people it will stop the ignorance.

People's ignorance & stupidity knows no limits. If you think they make comments only about black people, you're wrong. I'm caucasian (which I never considered important), they still make comments about your weight, the way you dress which is none of their business. As for "scary" issue, I've never heard a more ludicrous comment. People do look different & that's the beauty of the world. It's their job to teach their kids manners. When Chinese folks go abroad & face discrimination, they do complain. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Hi Rissyg, You're absolutely right with your views and I agree what you've said in your blog. Such types of partiality due to color, nationality and races should be removed.
