The majority of college students hesitate to go abroad even when they have the opportunity because they might struggle with the question whether it is worth their time or not. Whereas others are braver, they want to study in other countries to have life-changing experiences. A good thing to remember is that the majority of graduates describe their exchange semesters as the best time during their studies.

During the past 5 years, I had the chance to study in Finland, Canada, and China. I know, doing more than one exchange semester sounds abnormal but you will be convinced after reading my awesome “10 reasons to study abroad”:

1. See the world and gain countless new perspectives on things you would not have in your home country. You will be amazed by the differences in natural landscapes, lifestyles, ways of thinking, social norms and behavior in different countries and different continents. The world we live in is united nowadays. Therefore, one should not only be curious to know about lives on other side of the globe but also understand the global opportunities in the economy and in humanity development. 
2. Discover your-true-self and see what you can do on your own. During your time abroad, you will be exposed to countless different experiences that may influence the rest of your life.  You might discover your new passion for a future career or decide what you’re doing now isn’t your passion. And most importantly, there you will soon realize you are capable to take control all of your decisions. When you come back, you will be eager to take action to realize your dreams.
3. A semester abroad just looks great on a resume! One of the best reasons to study abroad. Employers are fascinated and impressed by your year abroad experiences. Not many students study abroad, thus it is something unique and noteworthy that will help you stand out.
4. You will have chance to meet new friends around the world. You will share interests with the people you meet and possibly gain new perspectives from them. Personally, having friends from different nationalities is one of the most valuable experiences for me during my exchange studies and one of the main reasons to study abroad. The more people you meet in your life, the more interesting your social life will be and the more you will grow as a person.
5. These new friends are a useful international network and may be helpful for your future career, especially if you like to have an international career.
6. You learn new communication and survival skills. Of course, you will face many challenges and difficulties when you first come to a new place. But, isn’t it the best way to learn to be fully independent and know how to adapt to new environment? Later, when you go back home and look at yourself, you might not believe how you have changed. For me, I’m no longer a materialistic-type-of-person, now I can go fully prepared with a 15kg backpack and brave the unknown. I learned to respect everything in its environment. 
7. Have more time to discover the city/country you go to during your time abroad because you will have 5-6 months instead of few weeks or days.
8. Lots of surprises and unpredictable events are likely to happen when you are going to a new place. For example, how many sweet, romantic, yet adventurous stories have you heard from friends who happily found their loves aboard?
9. You can tell others what’s not written in any guidebooks, speaking from your own experiences. You were there and did it.
10. Last but not least in “10 reasons to study abroad”, it is saying that “you are more likely to regret the things you didn’t do…”
