You are going to China and the mandarin language freaks you out? Chinese characters, different tones and different dialects give you an impression that it would take forever to master the language. Don’t be scared. Nothing is impossible unless you think it is. Let me share with you, Chinese beginners, some tips on how to tackle the mandarin.
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. This is one of my favorite Chinese proverbs, and so it seems fitting that it should be applied to learning Chinese. It’s going to be a long journey, but it is perfectly possible to learn Chinese painlessly by doing what you enjoy: communicating, reading and listening to interesting things, watching movies, listening to music, and so on. The first step is always the most important one.

If you have a smartphone, use it to your advantage. There are apps for everything. Get WeChat, text/talk to language partners, get notifications for daily vocabulary, there are Chinese-English dictionaries (I love Pleco) , and you can even set your phone and Siri in Chinese. That way you always have a friend to talk to, too.

Great post! I like the idea of studying with another foreigner who can't speak english. The chinese always get bogged down in your pronunciation its annoying and unhelpful. Another foreigner you have to speak chinese to would be perfect.
