Week 3: Window of the World and Volunteering

Week 3: Window of the World and Volunteering

Week three in Shenzhen has certainly been eventful. A typhoon, which emanated from the Philippines was expected but that soon dissipated when it reached Shenzhen. The weather has been peculiar here, with spouts of very heavy rain but also glorious sunshine. I have met and practiced my Mandarin with some lovely local Shenzhen people and really immersed myself into the life and culture of Shenzhen.

My morning cycle to work is beautiful and has been fantastic exercise. It encompasses beautiful smells from the tropical palm trees and wild flowers and I often pass elderly locals doing tai-chi. This week, my work at Ugari has been challenging, yet fascinating. I have been learning the process of how a company goes from manufacturing to making headway in the Asian markets. I am really enjoying myself at my company. They have helped me in getting the most out of my internship and have created a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

I have really enjoyed the food here in Shenzhen. Although I am yet to try proper local Shenzhen food, I have found some delicious and cheap restaurants in my local area serving a variety of Chinese cuisines from Beijing to Xian to Hong Kong.

At the weekend, I decided to make the trip to the Window of the World (世界之窗)Theme Park. Located in the Western part of Shenzhen, it is one of the must see places in Southern China. It houses over 130 reproductions of some of the most famous tourist attractions from different cities around the world such as the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, the Pyramids of Giza and even our very own Buckingham Palace and House of Parliament.

I would recommend at least a whole day there in order to get around all the continents, to see all the shows and experience all the attractions. At first I did think it was a little expensive (180 RMB) yet if you stay there from mid-morning, take a picnic, and see all the shows and attractions it is worth the price. To go up the Eiffel tower costs 30rmb, and has some of the most spectacular views of the city. There is also a log flume ride (10rmb) and great little stalls which service tasty treats and Chinese snacks. I finished the day by watching a magnificent and colourful show showcasing dances and costumes from all over the world coupled with a fireworks display in impressive Chinese fashion.

On Sunday I took part in some volunteering at a local Chinese school. The kids were full of energy and had a really strong passion for learning English. We played games, taught them important English words, how to introduce themselves and we sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ together. To see the smiles on their faces and the appreciation from both the kids and parents was a great feeling.  I hope to do some more volunteering during my time in Shenzhen and for the rest of my life.

All in all, another cracking week in Shenzhen.
