Blogs : DrMonkey commented on murphy903 's blog Western Education vs. Eastern Education

As for "why they don't it like in Western countries". Well, I bet on a mix of face saving, ignorance, head-in-the-sand attitude, and because it's self-sustaining. The teachers come from the system, they teach as they have been taught. Current China's job market is adapted to this education style. Of course, it's at ... Full Comment>>

I've been teaching Comp. Sci. at a top Chinese uni. All my students came through this regimen you mention. I speak for 90% of my students. All of them where middle-class kids, overall nice folks. For most of them, they are passionless, work for the mark, not to learn something. They are scared of anything involving ... Full Comment>>

A couple of days, there was that article on the problem of innovation in China. With all every details handled for the students, no room for personal development (which requires a hefty dose of daydreaming, trial & failure, etc.), what kind of adult are they building ? Great, you got students at Tsinghua. They will ... Full Comment>>

Spot-on article. Chinese gouv. offers funds to attract foreign junior and senior scientists. Those funds are fairly easy to get, but not so much people are running after it. Well, Chinese do have conservative tastes, that's an other thing... but *all* Chinese I know who tried some genuine Italian/French/Spanish/whatever food found things to their taste and enjoyed it. Like actual Parma ham, paella, steamed fish with cream sauce, chorizo, and more. Full Comment>>

Errrr... Fast food is not "western food" god damn it, it's a small, tiny subset of it. Calling fast food "western food" is like calling fried rice "chinese food". Fast food is seen everywhere because it's easy to produce in mass. Fast food was *conceived* to be mass produced ! So yeah, KFCs are popping like ... Full Comment>>

Recognizing the problem is the most important step to address it :) Not sure about your conclusion, however. China not being less competitive in the future, not so sure about it. If pollution issues are addressed, if work wages keep rising, if products quality keep improving, products cost might also increases to. ... Full Comment>>

Not insulated or very poorly insulated flats, built by the dozen of millions during the last 20 years. Electric heating/cooling in those flats, which is very wasteful due to the lack of insulation. Yup, back when Qing dynasty was at the end of its decay, and until the end of the civil war, quite a lot of Westerners were on the run for loot. Examples are abundant. I might fall into that much dreaded Westerner Foodie stereotype : I eat my breakfast in the street for 3 years and counting, and I've been completely fine so far ^^ I go mostly for the thin pancakes filled with various vegetables and vegetable-filled buns. I asked myself that question... To provide the same kind of education and environment I had back in Europe, it would be more expansive to recreate it here in China, rather than living in Europe. So I would spend more, while having to deal with the quirks of China's life, which I would largely avoid in China. ... Full Comment>>
