For what its worth - A Chinese-American's view on Expat life

For what its worth? Sound interesting, this title to bring you aimlessly into some random dudes blog about China.

BTW, I'm not in China, I'm in America. And for once in my life, after completing a Masters degree in Australia, I'm contemplating moving to china to find work. Why is this? I'm not fed up with life in the States, its just the jobs that I'm applying to are highly competitive and it is heaps fierce here for the job searcher and funemployed.

You see, I'm not some 20 something white chick or male trying to seek out new adventure in China. I"m actually a first generation Chinese/European American mut. More interesting, my father moved away from China to find opportunity in America in the late 60's. Opportunity he found, but the tables have turned now. China is the engine of the world now. Their clever tactics of riding on the US Dollar to grow their economy using the cheap labor claim to lure anti-tax, profit hoarding republicans to outsource jobs to China has proven a massive success. And they should be drinking to that, as it is destroying America's competitiveness.

Meanwhile, aside from hearing rants from a 30 something, you will know that I am considering a move to China in the near future. That said, I am grudgingly wondering if this element of discrimination will effect my endeavors there, given Africans difficulties, but also considering European & Euro-American successes, I am weighing the potential.

The only thing I have going for me now is that I can claim heritage in China. But I know, these don't matter to the Chinese people, its all about capitalizing on opportunity and maximizing your return. Sound like America? You got it.

Its all the same anywhere you go…

China is copying American imperialism vigorously. Soon China may overtake America as the country with the lowest social mobility in the world. Everyone's incompetent, clinging to family ties. All that matters is wealth, and skill is hired from abroad. From the sound of it, you will get all the culture shock that any foreigner gets here, with the advantage of not sticking out too much (staring gawking at people who are different is perfectly normal here - you'd get punched in the face for doing that in Europe). If you speak a bit of Chinese, you should be fairly self-sufficient, and respected for it. But whatever wealth, skill, technology or knowledge you bring to China, you must accept that you will never be a part of the spiritually enlightened, morally and culturally superior China. You are not Chinese, and will face negative value judgements like all the rest of us. It helps if you're not a serial dater, to not confirm the biases about opportunistic, untrustworthy Americans, of course. But in the end, it's a lot easier to go with the flow. If people want you to be that opportunist, you should be it, and you will reap the rewards. If you battle against prejudices, you are attacking people's biased, self-aggrandizing world views, and they won't like you for it. Ask any minority, and you'll find the secret to easy life is playing along with the theatre!
