What’s More Important: Ideas or Facts?

As man marches through times, questions about learning has been sprouting out left and right. Questions on what seems to be more important are raised. But how about on the query of learning ideas and concepts versus facts, what do you think is more important between the two? Well, actually, it is more important for students to learn ideas and concepts than facts for some valuable reasons.

First, learning concepts and ideas is a way more important than remembering facts for the reason that our daily living demands principles and ideas in striving for a better life. There’s more to life than facts. Yes, facts can help people but ideas are more helpful in realizing goals in life. They help people make sense of what is in their environment, how to deal with it and how life can be savored and lived better. Take for example when in elementary, facts are taught, just like in math. All of the numbers just don’t make sense without their use in the real-life setting. Everything just makes sense the moment the facts are formed with a wisdom behind which connects all facts and their relevance to life.

Second,  concepts are easier to remember than facts. Once one understands and gets the gist of a certain discourse, then the thought that comes to mind is easier to recall than just a fact, thereby leaving something into the mind of the one who comprehends the discourse. Concepts just require the power of comprehension over the power of memorization.

Learning is not just based on how much information or data one has learned. Learning has to do with what one does with what he/she has that helps in dealing with day to day lives. The ideas and thoughts can help in making use of the facts that have been imprinted in the memories of the learners. Though life is inevitably inseparable with learning facts, it is more sensible if things are interconnected through the thoughts that connect them or make sense out of something.
