Olympics Brings Cupping Therapy Into the Spotlight

Why does Michael Phelps have a bunch of purple circular spots that look like bruises on his back ? Some kind of new tattoo? did he take a nap on a bed of gold medals? Or have he and several other Olympians with those skin marks been in a bar fight?

It turns out that those circular spots are the result of a muscle treatment called “cupping therapy”, which is now becoming a household word thanks to the Summer Games in Rio.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy is a form of ancient Chinese medicine therapy purported to relieve swelling and pain, ease fatigue and increase immune function. In China, cupping therapy is considered to be one of the best way to treat pain, some forms of cupping therapy have also been used to treat serious medical conditions, such as blood disorders (anemia, hemophilia), arthritis and joint problems, skin problems such as eczema and acne. And it’s often passed down form one generation to the next.

How Does Cupping Therapy Work?

In fact, cupping therapy can be performed in different ways, the most popular technique for cupping, called “dry cupping” or “fire cupping”. Traditionally, a burning cotton bud is placed inside a glass cup, which produces a vacuum inside as the air inside the cup cools, and then causes the skin to rise and redden as blood vessels expand. The glass cup is generally left in skin surface for 5 to 10 minutes.
