Most people in China have a three character name. Usually it is one character for the last name and two for the first name. The last name is always first. In English if we put the last name first we always put a coma after it like in school role calls. As a person name always starts with his last name in China instead of the first name like we do in the west, there is always a great confusion when doing business or buying tickets etc. I’m always getting calls from my Chinese friends saying which the family name is and which is the given name. Likewise we are always confusing the order in reverse. The next name problem is the English name that the Chinese pick. Most of us English speakers have difficulty remembering the Chinese name. It has become a custom for everyone to pick an English name. As the English name is a name that is not official it may change over the years. When we pick a Chinese name we do the same thing. A teacher may pick a Chinese name for us for example. Once we become fluent in mandarin we may decide that name doesn’t fit us or the character used is not to our liking so we change it. When I was visiting the DuPont Company in Shanghai, the young man who attended to me was called Poca. It was short for Pocahontas. Historically Pocahontas was John Smith’s Indian girlfriend. John Smith was an English captain. I assumed seeing the name Poca that it was a female . When the young man came into the waiting room to attend to me I thought he had come to take me up to Pocahontas’ office. I was so taken aback I asked him why he was named Poca. He told me he loved the story in American history about Pocahontas so he chose that name. This is an example where I’m sure he will change his English name as he goes along in life.
