Just under the edge of the roof of the temples are little statues. The statues are often of warriors riding an animal and are to protect against the evil spirits. I found them to be quite beautiful and not too expensive. I bought some to decorate my home that were warriors riding an Arabian horse with long lances. Then I found another one that was a warrior riding a Chilin which is kind of a dog lion Character.  I found one of a lady pipe player riding an ox being lead by a flute player. The last one I was told was for Chinese Valentine’s Day. It was the storey of a goddess who went to earth and fell in love with a mortal. Her family later was angry with her for falling in love with an earthling and only permitted her to visit him one day a year. I don’t know how that statue got mixed in with the temple statues but it is the same type of work that is a semi relief and half sculpture. That is one of the fun things to do in China is to find all the different kinds of oriental art.  For me it was my favorite.
