Food, Glorious Food

Many foreigners living in China will understand my frustration of desperately wanting to eat something that just isn’t readily available…. My favourite examples of this are a curry, a Sunday roast, fish and chips from a UK chippy and a Wetherspoons burger! (Consequently if anybody reads this and thinks “hold on I know where this poor, hungry, English girl can get a decent curry in Wuhan” then please feel free to comment with the details!)

Recently I have been granted access to a microwave oven and this has opened up a whole new array of Western foods that I had previously been denied! Chips, pizza and a (small) variety of microwave meals are undoubtedly going to add inches to my waist line in the coming weeks! I’ve made a mental note to maintain my current weight regardless of the Western foods now available! Needless to say I am thankful for some small home food comforts without having to sit on a plane for 20+ hours! It does make me wonder however how much weight I’ll put on when I head back to the UK for the Summer… two months of being able to eat all of the things I’ve been missing during my time away is not going to assist with me getting into my favourite pair of jeans or the figure hugging dress I’ve been eyeing on a UK website!

Now please don’t get me wrong there are certainly Chinese dishes that I thoroughly enjoy… hot dry noodles being one of them… but with my limited Chinese vocabulary and reliance on pointing, I find that I end up ordering the same dishes time and time again! Hopefully my Chinese speaking skills will improve drastically in the coming months (wishful thinking!) and I’ll be an expert at ordering in local restaurants! I can’t help but wonder… what are your favourite Chinese dishes? Are there any dishes that you’d recommend?!

A good teacher can inspire and ignite the imagination.”
