Ennui in Suzhou

Ennui in Suzhou

Having recently returned to Suzhou, and giving the usual local social media outlets a cursory review, it becomes despondently apparent how little activity there is in the expatriot domain compared to even one year ago (a comparison of events concurrent with this time one year ago on this very website's events page glaringly reveal this.)

Is this a consequence of prolonged economic woe, or a specific malaise afflicting the local laowai populace? Have you retreated into your caves to hibernate to avoid record levels of pm2.5? Shouldn't there be more generosity of spirit at this time of the festive season, aside from the imbibing of copious happy hour cocktails in the vestiges of this great cities watering holes? LiGongDi looks deserted, the Rainbow Walk is eviscerated, Time Square is a ghost town! Moon Harbor seems to have been vacated before the paint dried on the optimistically flamboyant grand opening signage!

As attractive as it is to enjoy the sparsity and personal space Suzhou offers, it seems that we've embraced solitute a smidgeon too rigourously.

I live in Suzhou for 3 years now. I don't hang out in expat bars, mainly due to my heavy work schedule. Moon Harbor, I often walk or run there, always a desert since 3 years (and they build more offices and shopping area, while the existing ones are empty since years, WTF ?). Agree, Time Square can be gorgeous, yet it's never quite crowded. Not sure if I feel unhappy about this :) You can see some Westerners the other side of Jinli Lake, which have a very nice board walk, with more people. SIP Education Area is a Westerner ghetto, you'll see them doing their groceries ^^
