One IT engineer from Hangzhou, in East China’s Zhejiang Province, proposed to his girlfriend by folding a stack of 999 bank notes worth 200,000 yuan into a unique bouquet of 100-yuan paper roses.

The man, surnamed Chen, visited his girlfriend's parents during Spring Festival, and told them of the intention of popping the question.

While the girlfriend’s mother didn’t object, she hinted many times that Chen should buy a house and a car if he wanted to marry her daughter, according to Chinese media reports.

On Friday morning, as people around the country celebrated Valentine’s Day, Chen’s bouquet became a hot topic on Sina Weibo.

Many internet users noted that money can’t buy love, suggesting that the tradition of sealing marriage with a property deal is no longer a romantic requirement in China.

Chen invested all of his savings into his marriage proposal. He rounded up his friends on Feb,8 and began folding the roses, each made of two 100-yuan notes, and finished before his girlfriend’s birthday on Wednesday.

“The money is far from enough to buy a house, and I think buying a car is unnecessary,” said Chen. The girl said Yes!, Chinese media reported.
