Air pollution part II: Buying a face mask

Air pollution part II: Buying a face mask

So I finally bit the bullet and bought a face mask yesterday...yeah, 2 days after the worst recorded air pollution the city's ever seen. What can I say, I didn't want to leave the house this weekend, and I really didn't want to spend the money. But my morning commute to work on monday changed my opinion (the somber "oh god I'm going to die" look in everyones' eyes did it for me).

Credit where credit's due, this guide ended up being pretty helpful actually, so thanks go out to echinacities' Esta Chappell.

The mask, a Respro "sporsta" mask with "techno filter" (UK made), cost a little under 400 RMB, but from what I've read online, it is top of the line and is good for filtering out all of that nasty PM2.5 garbage that's been hanging over Beijing for the last week. It also works well for active use, which is great for whenever I get around to "being active" again. The shop clerk helped me fit it, but my fat head makes it kinda uncomfortable. Either that or it's supposed to feel uncomfortable and that's how you know it's working. Time will tell.

The clerk told me that the filter is good for 60 hours of use, which I thought was enough at the time, so I opted out of a deal price on two extra filters. This is something that I'm beginning to regret now as it appears that I'll be wearing it quite often.

Lastly, the look of the thing is a bit strange. I opted for Black as neither blue or red will really go well with a dark coat. When I put it on while wearing a dark hat, I thought that I kind of resembled Darth Vader. When I showed it to my friend later on, sans hat, he told me that I looked like Bane from the Dark Knight Rises.

At least I'm saving my lungs though.
